Why right-clicking to save Instagram photos rarely gives you the original file
Instagram, like most modern websites, doesn't serve a single version of each photo. It stores several copies at different sizes and decides which one to send your browser based on available screen space — an image in your phone's feed can weigh a fraction of what loads when you open the same photo in a large desktop tab. When you right-click and save, your browser saves exactly the copy that was loaded at that moment, which is almost never the highest-resolution one available. This is even more noticeable saving directly from the mobile feed, where Instagram prioritizes fast loading over sending the heaviest file — the thumbnail you see can be considerably smaller than the original image the user uploaded.
